Free State Province moved a step closer to defending the SAFA/SAB Under 21 Championship after beating Western Cape 3-0 at the Giant Stadium on Thursday.
Even though Western Cape lost the match they had several players showing off some individual skills such as Moegamat Maart, Aushron Kruger and Bradley Okkers, who was named man of the match. Free State were the better team technically, tactically and physically though.
Thabo Maphakisa was the danger man for Free State up front and gave Western Cape's defence a torrid time every time he was in possession of the ball. Lebona Ratutubaka was first to find the target in the 4th minute after a pass from Maphakisa to beat the keeper hands down.
Even though Western Cape enjoyed better ball possession they still failed to penetrate the opposition defence. Their best chances only came in the 25th and 38th minutes through Kruger and Justin Heyns respectively, but their shots were saved by 'keeper Majasto Xaba in the Free State goals.
Maphakisa managed to put his team ahead in the 45th minute before the referee called the game for recess.
Western Cape continued to fight, but still Free State looked the better side when going forward. Maphakisa grabbed his second goal of the match in the 79th minute to bring the final score to 3-0 in favor of Free State.
