Northern Cape registered their second win at the 2014 SAB Under-21 National Championship when they defeated University Sports South Africa 1-0 at the North West University Sports Grounds on Monday
Christopher Balie scored the only goal of the match midway through the second half to hand his side their second win on the trot after beating Western Cape by the same margin on Sunday
The first half saw very little in the way of clear-cut chances with both sides resorting to long balls and not getting enough numbers into the box.
Gregory Afrika came close from a freekick in the 25th
minute with USSA goalkeeper Kevan Van Niekerk fumbling the initial effort before recovering to gather under pressure.
After a goalless first half, Bruce Mtabane also found the target from a freekick in the 67th
minute, but Northern Cape goalkeeper Grant de Bruin was able to make a solid save.
The deadlock was eventually broken two minutes later as Balie was put through on the right side of the box and managed to bury his low shot at the far post to score his second goal of the tournament.
USSA came closest to grabbing an equaliser in the 83nd minute when lanky defender Sifiso Nkosi got onto an end of a cross inside the box, only to send his header wide of goal.
Northern Cape are now sitting at the top of their pool with six points from two games, while USSA have zero points from one game.
