Northern Cape collected valuable points when they defeated neighbours Western Cape 1-0 in their SAB Under-21 Championship encounter on Sunday afternoon.
Christopher Balie scored the only goal of the game deep into the second half to help his side stun the defending champions.
The first half was a tightly-contested affair with neither side able to create clear scoring chances as passes went astray in the final third.
Northern Cape came closest to taking the lead in the 35th minute when Alroy Baardman drilled his effort over the crossbar from outside the box, leaving the two sides deadlocked at 0-0 going into the half time break.
They had an even better opportunity in the 51st minute as Gregory Afrikaans swung in a pinpoint cross from the right, only for Andile Quili to head over the crossbar from close range.
Northern Cape eventually got it right in the 79th minute when Balie volleyed the ball into bottom left corner after he was left unmarked just outside the box.The Western Cape pressed forward in the final minutes but Northern Cape goalkeeper Grant de Bruin was able to command his area to help his side bag maximum points.Western Cape 0Northern Cape (0) 1 (Balie 79')
