Bheki Nkosse netted a late winner as Mpumalanga claimed a 2-1 win over the Western Cape in the opening day of the 2015 SAB Under-21 championship at the Giant Stadium in Shoshanguve on Monday.
Eager to bounce back from their defeat to Free State, Mpumalanga had to come from a goal down to secure their first win of the competition in what was a repeat of the 2013 final - the Western Cape won that particular clash 3-2 on home soil.
Dillan Lakay gave the Cape side the lead with 24 minutes on the clock in the Group A tussle.
The teams headed into the tunnel on level pegging as Siphamandla Dhlamini converted from the spot on the cusp of half-time after Apiwe Mayaya committed a foul inside the area.
Mpumalanga looked the better side after the break, but found it difficult to find a way past Sipho Jacobs from open play, the Western Cape keeper pulling off a string of saves towards the end of the match.
They would finally find the winner with five minutes of regulation time remaining - Nkosse securing all three points for Mpumalanga.
