Defending champions Free State got their title defence off to a winning start at the Giant Stadium in Shoshanguve on Monday morning.
Goals from Morobi Mothobi and Teboho Mokoena either side of the break secured a 2-1 win over Mpumalanga at the 2015 SAB Under-21 Championship.
Spearheaded by 2015 Castle Lager Football Academy player of the camp Tshepo Mokhabi, the 2014 champions were favourites heading into the Group A tussle.
After a cagey start Mothobi would hand Free State a 1-0 lead at the break.
High on confidence following their success in Mafikeng last year, Mokoena would double Free State's adavantage following good work by Teboho Modise in the 70th minute.
Mpumalanga would narrow the deficit four minutes later, Mthokozisi Madalane setting up a tense finish.
Madalane's strike though proved to little too late as Free State started where they left off 12 months ago.
