University Sports South Africa (USSA) were held to a 1-1 draw by a plucky Eastern Cape outfit on day two of the SAB Under-21 National Championship at Giant Stadium in Shoshanguve on Tuesday.

The group B tussle got off to a cagey start with the first shot in anger falling to USSA winger Richard Moremi in the 18th minute - his left-footed free kick flying just wide of Kwanele Bidi's goal.

Sloppy defending almost cost the Eastern Cape in the 33rd minute, but Tebogo Galane's failed to make them pay with his shot blocked by a back tracking Eastern Cape midfielder.

The USSA striker, who scored a hat-trick on the opening day, would not be denied two minutes later. Having failed to clear their lines, the sturdy forward punished the Eastern Cape side with a stunning bicycle-kick goal which was to hot to handle for Bidi, 1-0.

The Eastern Cape hit back four minutes later with a spectacular goal of their own. Teboho Moeti picked up the ball on the far side before weaving his way past a static defender and the oncoming USSA goalkeeper, the lanky attacker left with an easy finish to level matters, 1-1.

USSA came out guns blazing after the interval, Gabriel Moshoma guiding his low shot across the face of the Eastern Cape goal a minute into the second stanza.

Moshoma would then see his next shot at goal in the 64th minute canon off the crossbar before Simbongile Njokwe's header suffered the same fate 16 minutes later.

USSA continued to dominate the encounter, but were ultimately unlucky as they failed to find a winner from their catalogue of second-half chances.Bertin Basson, Today 02:43 PM
