A first-half penalty from Jeranimo Power secured a narrow 1-0 win for Northern Cape over Gauteng in the 2015 SAB Under-21 Championship at Giant Stadium in Shoshanguve on Monday morning.
Boasting the likes of Castle Lager SuperStars Christopher Balie and the impressive Avril Vries, Northern Cape would have fancied their chances heading into the opening game of the tournament.
Power would give Northern Cape the lead in first-half stoppage time - coolly slotting the ball into the right corner.
Eager to improve on their poor showing at last year's event in Mafikeng, the host province pressed for the equaliser after the break and went close through Mbulelo Lukhubeni who saw his left-footed shot well saved by Joseph Warrick in the Northern Cape goal.
Robin Isaacs would then miss a glorious chance to double Northern Cape's lead before Madala Malmule guided his long range effort just wide in the final minute of regulation time.
In the end Power's spot-kick proved to be enough as Gauteng suffered defeat in front of their home supporters.
